Moving Image

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision offers a unique service to the heritage sector and the production industry.

With an extensive collection of moving images dating from 1895, material is available for use in documentaries, exhibitions, news broadcasts and other productions.

Timeframes

Please note that Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision’s archival collection of moving images is not production-ready: technical or preservation work may be required before access can take place. As a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) we are bound to uphold international standards of collection management, preservation and access – learn more about our preservation work.

Please allow up to eight weeks to access most collection material. This covers research, retrieval, preparation of material, transfer time, clearances and delivery. The timeframe for large projects requiring multiple items is by negotiation.

For more information about re-use processes please refer to our guide on Production Access to Moving Image Items.

Rights Information

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision does not own its collection or have the rights to authorise its re-use or distribution – while the archive takes custody and care of the physical items, all other rights are retained by the legal rights holders. Therefore access is subject to clearance from rights holders.

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision is a bicultural organisation that upholds the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in our policies and practices. Archive consultation with kaitiaki (iwi / hapū and / or whānau) is required to seek permission whenever access is requested to Taonga Māori Collection items.

Read more here on the rights that pertain to items in Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision’s collections.

Costs

Costs vary according to the size and scope of each project. An archive management fee of $60 per hour + GST is charged, in addition to any internal technical costs. This may vary depending on the technical, rights, and administrative work needed in each case. An estimate of costs can be made when your request for footage has been submitted.
