The Mighty Civic
This 1988 doco celebrated the grand old theatre's history at an uncertain time - the lease was due to revert to the citizens of Auckland on 31 December 1993. Since then the Civic has been magnificently refurbished; it re-opened on the 70th anniversary of its first performance, on 20 December 1999. Using archival footage, poetic narration and interviews with many of the surviving "old-timers", award-winning filmmakers Peter Wells and Stewart Main, lovingly reconstruct a history of the Civic Theatre in Queen Street, Auckland.

"THE MIGHTY CIVIC is a highly spiced blend of history, fantasy ... and actuality. Old showgirls reminisce; an enchanted usherette leads you on a voyage of discovery into the secrets of Auckland's Xanadu. Cinema moguls break their hearts, dancing girls tiptoe over champagne-drenched carpets, American G.I.s meet Kiwi beauties under the twinkling stars of the Civic's midnight roof.” - New Zealand Film Commission; www.nzfilm.co.nz/film/the-mighty-civic; 26/03/2014.
